Steven Brudevold

Birth Date: 1949-07-12
Graduation year: 1967
Deceased Date: 1978-05-14
Obituary:
Died at the age of 28. After graduation from high school Steven attended the University of Minnesota School of Forestry. About halfway through his degree, he decided to take a break to reflect on his degree choice. Unfortunately, the draft lottery came out and his lottery number was #15. He had to make a quick choice before he was drafted by the Army. He enlisted in the Navy in 1970 and trained to be an aviation mechanic. His final rank was ADJ-2, or "Aviation Jet Engine Mechanic Second Class".

Steven served the entire time as a jet engine mechanic for Attack Squadron VA-75, "The Sunday Punchers", who flew A-6 Intruder jet aircraft. He was on two cruises aboard the USS Saratoga Aircraft Carrier (CVA-60) to the Mediterranean Sea. His squadron was called to Vietnam aboard the Saratoga in April, 1972, and was involved in Operation Linebacker until a cease-fire was signed in January of 1973.

In 1974 Steven finished up his four years in the Navy and went back to finish his degree at the University of Minnesota School of Forestry. He received his degree in December, 1976.

Steven was a "Hot Shot Firefighter" for the U.S. Government, being trained to go anywhere in the U.S.A. at short notice to emergency situations. He landed his first Forestry job in Minnesota as a "Timber Cruiser" (surveying forests and marking the trees that could be harvested). When he moved to Ely, MN he had finally been designated "First Class Forester", and therefore had finally "arrived" at what he set out to do.

Steven Brudevold passed away on May 14, 1978. Steven was killed in a motorcycle accident driving from Duluth (where he had been at a conference meeting) back home to Ely. His fiancee planted over 20,000 Red Pines in his memory. She is a forester, as is her husband and they live on 80 acres north of Duluth. They have named their Red Pines "The Brudevold Forest." Last summer I was able to reconnect with Steven's fiancee after 38 years and see the forest. What a beautiful tribute to my brother.
He is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

Patrick J Devine

Birth Date: 1949-09-30
Graduation year: 1967
Deceased Date: 2019-12-05
Obituary:
Pat died at the Age 70. I fondly remember Pat as Nathan Detroit* in our high school production of "Guys & Dolls". I'm glad that Pat was able to attend some of our 50th Class Reunion events.
Pat Devine, of St. Louis Park, passed peacefully on December 5. The self-proclaimed "Kid from the Park" played Little League at Skippy Field, performed in musicals at St. Louis Park Senior High, and raised his own sons about a 5 iron's distance from the house he grew up in. He was grateful to his parents, James and Mary, for initiating a lifelong love of the arts and language, as well as a sense of social justice. In his early career, Patrick played Donny Brook in the original production of the rock musical "The House of Leather" and worked as a booking agent and record promoter in the Minneapolis music scene; later he worked in advertising and public relations. He volunteered with the SLP Human Rights Commission and co-chaired the 1993 Human Rights Expo which drew over 2,500 attendees for a day of multicultural arts performances and workshops focused on celebrating diversity and combating prejudice. Patrick proposed to the love of his life, Shirley, at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 1980, and together they raised two sons whom he often called his life's greatest work and joy. Quick with a Brando impression or an Irish brogue, ready to quote literature from Hamlet to Hamilton, Patrick was joyful, loving, and kind. He loved to bring people together, always deflected from himself to ask about you. Illness was part of his lifelong story, yet he held an attitude of enduring gratitude. Patrick is survived by his wife, Shirley, and sons Aaron (Jackey) and Max; grandson Oliver; his siblings Jimmy (Terry), Michael, and Mary; and many beloved family and friends.

Obituary:
"In frailty and vulnerability, we shine.” — John B. Goodman

John B. Goodman, author, speaker, and visionary chairman of The Goodman Group, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016, from complications following a heart attack. A resident of Minnetonka Beach, John was 66 years old.

John is preceded in death by his mother Georgine (Shanedling) Goodman and father Sidney A. Goodman. Charles Gross

Birth Date: 1949-07-05
Graduation year: 1967
Deceased Date: 2022-07-28
Obituary:
The family mourns the passing of Charles “Charlie” Francis Gross. Preceded in death by his former wife, Borden Bell; his mother and father, Babette, and Morton B. Gross. Survived by his brother, Hal; and special friend, Jan Levinsohn Milner; cousins, Sue (Mrs. Alvin Zelickson) and Connie (Mrs. Myron Samovitz).

Charlie had an extraordinary career as an educator with the Delano Public School System, Delano, MN, where he taught for 34 years. His lectures enlightened students and fostered an understanding of history and geography through his classes, which in certain cases were college-level. His courses on Western Civilization in particular. In a recent letter, his former Principal stated “You liked and respected your students, believed in their potential, inspired their learning with lessons that were well-planned, yet spontaneous. An early user of technology and aware of trends in teaching. Most of all you mastered the art of the lecture.” This made his classes popular.

Charlie’s other passion was Fastpitch Softball. He coached the young women of both Delano Middle and High Schools. And later, in retirement, the women of the St. Louis Park Fastpitch Association and High School softball program. He took his Delano teams to the Wright County Conference Championships 13 times and had 10 State Tourney appearances. During his career, he coached 19 All-State players, 15 All-Star event players, and three Hall-of-Fame players. Charlie himself was elected to the Minnesota Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2011. He was an early supporter of the Minnesota Lynx WNBA team attending games each season, long before their rise to the championships.

Upon retiring, Charlie returned to his childhood home in St. Louis Park. He became an active member of the block, bringing neighbors together with contact lists and occasional block events, which have become a tradition. He created a beautiful garden at his home, complete with a fountain and waterfall he designed and maintained.

At this time, by personally researching, he learned women’s fastpitch in St. Louis Park was only partially meeting Title IX standards by not having softball fields for the women’s program equal to the men. He approached the City Council and the Mayor’s office to consider this, offering plans for the use of the fields over by Aquila Park in St. Louis Park. He worked with joy on this with both the city council and city staff. After a couple of years, he was able to help secure a “flipping” of the two fields, creating a dedicated field for both St. Louis Park High School and the St. Louis Park Fastpitch Association teams. With the help of the council and a close association with the Parks & Recreation Department, the two fields were re-designed for the women. There is still more to accomplish, but Charlie got the process moving. It gave him enormous pleasure in his retirement to work with the St. Louis Park teams as a volunteer coach, focusing on training and skill development, from 2014 until two weeks before his death.

Charlie loved music of all kinds and was a lifelong drummer. He was a band member in the 60’s with a group called “The Shires,” who performed around the Twin Cities at high schools and colleges. He was a big fan of “girl groups” of the 60’s and later, and an enthusiastic admirer of the “wall of sound” and producer Phil Spector.

Charlie received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Drake University and his Master of Arts from the University of Minnesota. He graduated from St. Louis Park High School ’67.

Charlie’s humor, patience, innate kindness, and extensive knowledge of both world and local history was a fascination to those who knew him. He delighted in taking friends and family on “touring” drives of both Minneapolis and St. Paul — creating wonderful tales of how these cities were founded and built — using his knowledge of both geography and history to inspire.

Obituary:
"Jim" of My Music Store of St. Louis Park, died peacefully Thursday, March 29th at the age of 68. Jim, born and raised in Rochester, MN, spent his teenage years in St. Louis Park (SLP High School ’67) and attended the U of MN. His first job, teaching guitar lessons at the local music store, morphed into selling almost everyone their "first guitar". Jim played on the road or as a backup for well-known artists and was the bass guitarist in Soundscape. Jim and Linda started My Music Store in Golden Valley, in Nov 1999, and so began the annual Guitar Toss benefiting the Animal Humane Society. The store closed in March 2017, a year after Jim retired. Jim loved jokes and was a storyteller.

Obituary:
A few months ago Tom started “not feeling well,” which lasted for a couple of weeks. As time passed, he developed a viral infection, got pink eye, and then Bell’s palsy struck the left side of his face. From there, he began to have neurological symptoms of numbness in his mouth while brushing his teeth, being unsteady on his feet, and a few other things. Things changed quickly after that with walking/mobility and fine motor skills declining, confusion, memory loss, sleeping a lot, and not feeling well overall.

Tom went to the emergency room, was hospitalized and released the week of Thanksgiving. Upon discharge from Banner Medical Thunderbird Hospital, he was prescribed a steroid and anti-viral medication. Tom had a follow-up neurological appointment the following Wed, Dec 7 for an MRI test.  At that time Tom was prescribed Plavix, a blood thinner as a preventative measure in case he had a stroke. Tom’s condition continued to decline over the following days with memory loss, extreme fatigue, confusion, uneasy feelings, balance problems, and feeling horrible. On Mon, Dec 12 Tom became extremely fatigued and not responsive. Nancy called the paramedics and they brought Tom to Banner Boswell Medical Center where he was admitted.

His symptoms have been worsening and he sleeps most of the time. Multiple tests of all kinds (including 6 MRIs, 2 spinal taps, tests for auto-immune diseases, and more) and evaluations by doctors of many specialties have sadly not yet revealed a diagnosis or treatment plan. The doctors have suggested a range of possibilities from stroke to cancer. It’s been very difficult as the information and suggested evaluations/testing, diagnosis, and treatment plan change quickly and often contradict each other, while his condition worsens. We are working hard to advocate for Tom and are hoping to transfer him to a different hospital as soon as possible where he can get fresh eyes and a new approach to his evaluation and care.

Thank you all for keeping Tom and our family in your thoughts and prayers. We are so blessed to have a big network of family and friends to rely on for support. We are grateful for each and every one of you and love you all so much.

We are finding it difficult to keep up with communications while we are in the midst of rapidly changing and often conflicting information. Our immediate family is at the hospital daily from the crack of dawn until just before we go to bed. We wish we could call, text, and talk to each of you, but we are not able to at this time as we care for and advocate for Tom. As much as we want to talk to all of you, we ask that you refrain from calling and texting immediate family members for now, and instead use this Caring Bridget site for updates and to leave messages and questions. We will read your messages to Tom to help uplift his spirits, and we will try to post updates to this page once per day at night.

At this time, we don’t need any food or anything else. Matt and Justin are with Nancy and Tom, and Matt, Jason, Justin, and their families will be in Arizona over the holidays.

We will likely need help in the days and weeks in the new year and we will update this space with those requests. Thank you all for your love and support!

With love and gratitude,
The Hatcher family
Keith Gershkow - January 25th, 2024
I just found out tonight ( 1/25/23 ) that Tom passed away and I really loved this guy. He was one of the first guys I met when our family moved to St. Louis Park. I lived on Glenhurst and Tom lived on France. We played ball together, went to birthday parties, hung out at his house. One of the best things about the reunions was seeing Tom and his wife Nancy along with the other Brookside people. Bless you my friend
