Steven Brudevold

STEVEN BENNETT BRUDEVOLD

July 12, 1949 - May14, 1978 at the age of 28

After graduation from high school Steven attended the University of Minnesota School of Forestry.  About halfway through his degree he decided to take a break to reflect on his degree choice. Unfortunately the draft lottery came out and his lottery number was #15. He had to make a quick choice before he was drafted by the Army. He enlisted in the Navy in 1970 and trained to be an aviation mechanic. His final rank was ADJ-2, or "Aviation Jet Engine Mechanic Second Class".

Steven served the entire time as a jet engine mechanic for Attack Squadron VA-75,  "The Sunday Punchers", who flew A-6 Intruder jet aircraft. He was on two cruises aboard the USS Saratoga Aircraft Carrier (CVA-60) to the Mediterranean Sea. His squadron was called to Vietnam aboard the Saratoga in April, 1972, and was involved in Operation Linebacker until a cease-fire was signed in January of 1973.

In 1974 Steven finished up his four years in the Navy and went back to finish his degree at the University of Minnesota School of Forestry. He received his degree in December, 1976.

Steven was a "Hot Shot Firefighter" for the U.S. Government, being trained to go anywhere in the U.S.A. at short notice to emergency situations.  He landed his first Forestry job in Minnesota as a "Timber Cruiser" (surveying forests and marking the trees that could be harvested). When he moved to Ely, MN he had finally been designated "First Class Forester", and therefore had finally "arrived" at what he set out to do.

Steven Brudevold passed away on May 14, 1978. Steven was killed in a motorcycle accident driving from Duluth (where he had been at a conference meeting) back home to Ely. His fiancee planted over 20,000 Red Pines in his memory. She is a forester, as is her husband and they live on 80 acres north of Duluth. They have named their Red Pines "The Brudevold Forest." Last summer I was able to reconnect with Steven's fiancee after 38 years and see the forest. What a beautiful tribute to my brother.

He is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

JOHN B GOODMAN
In frailty and vulnerability, we shine.” — John B. Goodman

John B. Goodman, author, speaker and visionary chairman of The Goodman Group, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016 from complications following a heart attack. A resident of Minnetonka Beach, John was 66 years old.

John is preceded in death by his mother Georgine (Shanedling) Goodman and father Sidney A. Goodman. John led The Goodman Group with his heart and soul since 1976. Originally founded as Sage Company by his father Sidney A. Goodman, The Goodman Group today is a leader in developing and managing senior living communities, residential communities and commercial properties in 10 states. He is also the author of two books: The Road to Self: Reflections from a Soulful CEO, and Moments Matter: Everyday Inspiration from a Soulful CEO.

John and his team of 4,200 employees celebrated the company’s 50th anniversary in 2015. The company was honored with the prestigious 2014 Performance Excellence Advancement Level Award, based on Malcolm Baldrige Criteria. In 2015, the company was the first long-term care and residential property management company in Minnesota to be named a Yellow Ribbon Company for its support of military service members and their families.

John’s life-long commitment to business leadership, community service and philanthropy was remarkable. He established Intergenerational Living & Health Care, Inc. in 1992 to develop communities linking senior living and health care with children’s learning centers. He also established the Johnny B. Good Foundation in 1990 to sponsor programs that encourage individuals to accept responsibility for their lives.

He served dozens of organizations in roles ranging from board member to benefactor, including National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, World Presidents’ Organization (YPO-WPO), World Business Academy, Mount Sinai Hospital, Business for Social Responsibility, American Cancer Society, American Health Care Association and National Association of Senior Living Industries.

In 2002, John received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which is awarded to people who exemplify themselves as humanitarians. He received the 2011 Citizen of the Year award from the Largo-Mid Pinellas Chamber of Commerce.

Known by his legions of friends as “Johnny,” he was a fun-loving, generous, inclusive and deeply compassionate human being. A mentor to many, John devoted his life to caring and helping others. He believed passionately in a life of service. Recently named a “Most Humble CEO” in Minnesota Business magazine, his peers describe him as a man who is “behind the limelight and has changed the world.”
